RoboCopy – The best file copying application for Windows!

RoboCopy from Microsoft is the ultimate (in my opinion)  file and folder copying tool.  It has a great variety of feature from logging to max file size and many other things.  RoboCopy is part of Windows Server Support Kit.

There is a GUI version availbale, but i am not a fan, it doesn’t have the full functionality of the command line app and you can not use in in a script!

You can download Windows 2003 Server Support Kit (x86) here

The tool is a command line based application, but with a great list of functions.  It will copy a full file and folder structure, including securities, file and folder attributes and long names.  It has multiple functions including max and min size, age etc full list below.

There are two functions i would always say you must use, /w and /r if you don’t set these to a number that you think is acceptable, you will be waiting for ever if a file is in use.

Some examples would be nice. One of the most common requests I see is to only copy modified files. There’s a million switches in Robocopy for something you only use sometimes, it’s a real pain to work it all out.
